PC Do's and Don'ts

Below list of items to help you avoid issues with your computer. Just as importantly, when computer not in use, shut it down. This will help prolong the life of it and also avoid phising scams.

Turning off:

a. When shutting off your computer, be sure to do so properly by going to the widows ‘Start’ and then ‘Shut Down’ option for Win XP, 7 and Vista. For Windows 8, move mouse to top right corner, then click 'Settings', then click 'Power' and choose shut down.

1

DO NOT RUN MORE THAN ONE VIRUS PROGRAM AT A TIME.

The two programs may conflict with each other. Every time you download a file, both will try to scan it. Conflicts could result in other programs failing to work and Windows becoming less stable. Keep in mind that every program running uses RAM and clock cycles, potentially slowing down every other running program.

2

DO NOT INSTALL ANY WEB‐BASED TRIAL PROGRAMS OR WEB BROWSER ADD ‐ ON's.

Coupon Saver, Game Launcher etc typically slow your browser. Also see 'List of Bad Software' link above.

3

DO CHOOSE YOUR INSTALLS WISELY.

If updating or installing a program, BE SURE TO GO STEP BY STEP and UN-check any additional programs that it may want to add. An example of this is JAVA. Java is a web graphics program but when it updates, it wants to add McAfee. Just be sure to UN-check this or it will cause a conflict with your current anti‐virus program.

4

DO BE CAUTIOUS OF SUSPICIOUS EMAILS.

If you receive an email from ‘anyone’ without a subject in the header or a link (click here), be sure to just DELETE IT without opening it. These types of email will instantly put a virus on your computer. Good sources for email scam alerts are: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/ and http://www.snopes.com/.
